George Town, Cayman Islands (June 13th, 2024) – The historic introduction of 5G mobile technology is being hailed as a national triumph for the Cayman Islands.

Leading entertainment and communications provider Flow recently switched on the first of its 5G cell towers and the moment was celebrated with a landmark event attended by distinguished guests and dignitaries, including a keynote address by The Hon. Isaac Rankine, Minister for Youth, Sports and Heritage.

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, technological advancement is not a luxury but a necessity. It is the driving force behind economic growth, innovation and community development. The implementation of 5G technology in the Cayman Islands represents a significant lead forward,

he said.

The Cayman Islands is the first territory in the Caribbean to experience 5G connections.

The advent of 5G technology will undoubtedly foster economic growth and innovation within our islands. Faster data speeds and improved connectivity will enable businesses to operate more efficiently, allow entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life and industries to embrace cutting-edge solutions,

added Rankine.

5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for cellular networks, which telecom providers began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the successor to 4G technology that provides connectivity to most current mobile phones.

More and more 5G sites will come on stream as Flow continues to build out the infrastructure and customers can look forward to an enhanced user experience with increased data speeds, greater capacity and ultrafast connections

Improved access and faster speeds will help to bridge the digital divide, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status, can participate in the digital revolution. Education, healthcare, and public services will be transformed, empowering our communities and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Caymanians,

said Rankine.

The introduction of 5G also coincided with the launch of Flow Mania – a groundbreaking bundle that combines up to 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) broadband speeds, unlimited mobile data and minutes, and resilient ‘Wi-Fi Back-Up’ that ensures customers remain online when there’s an internet or power outage.

Rankine applauded C&W Communications, Flow’s parent company, for its continued commitment and substantial investment in the Cayman Islands.

This groundbreaking moment for the Cayman Islands is a true indication of our shared vision for a digitally empowered future. We also affirm our commitment to working closely with Flow and the wider community to ensure that this technological advancement translates into tangible benefits for all,

he said.

We stand on the precipice of a new era, where technology and connectivity will propel us towards unprecedented heights of prosperity and progress. Let is embrace this opportunity with open arms and unwavering determination, securing a brighter future for the Cayman Islands and its people.

To enjoy the benefits of 5G, customers need to have a 5G device with SIM Card, a 5G plan and to be in an area currently covered by 5G. As more and more cell towers come on stream, customers will start to see their mobile devices automatically updated with the ‘5G’ symbol confirming a connection to the new network.
